Organize with ordinary office supplies

sqlDESKTOP is a computerized manual filing system arranged just like an office. You can organize information you access regularly : files, multimedia data on CD ROM or DVD, WEB pages, database queries, emails, newsgroups etc... using familiar, everyday office supplies (folders, binders, filing cabinets, etc.). Easy to use, sqlDESKTOP makes extensive use of graphics, using pictures of real cabinets and real folders. With sqlDESKTOP, you can clip together documents related to the same topic as you would with normal office documents. Even if the documents were not created by the same program. Or if some are stored on hard disk and others on CD ROM or Internet sites. 

 

Import existing data

Import of existing data is easy. You can import file per file or a whole directory with or without sub-directories.

Add annotation

You can annotate any cataloged item to add additional information.

 

Organize digital photos

You can use sqlDESKTOP to organize photos either into album or into comic style story with bulk talk.

Turn your desktop into a stateless desktop to lower support cost

sqlDESKTOP stores all persistent data into a centralized SQL database and turns your desktop into a stateless desktop (desktop without persistent data). Support of stateless desktop is easier (and cheaper) than traditional fat desktop. There is no vital information to backup or restore, and recovery from a severe disaster is very simple because stateless desktops are interchangeable parts that are easy to replace

Templates management

You can create with your native productivity software (Word, Open Office, Excel, Star Office, etc..) templates containing your stationery, letter head, pre printed form etc.. and easily distribute them. With just a drag and drop, users (even unsophisticated users) can use these templates without a deep knowledge of your native  software.

 

Provide shortcut (link) to information

Usually companies are divided into several departments: technical department, sales department, financial department etc.. Information about a project may be located among these departments: technical departments have technical specifications, sales departments have orders for the project and financial departments have costs of the project etc..With shortcuts, you can keep pieces of related information grouped in the same place without moving them out of their original workspace,  allowing their owner to continue to work undisturbed on them.

You can use visual yellow sticky notes as reminders.

You can attach a to-do list with start date and expected end date to each document.

Items newly created or modified and items with uncompleted scheduled tasks will have a new flag and a to do flag displayed next to them. It's easy to see which items need additional work.

Send mail over the Internet

sqlDESKTOP can connect to SMTP and POP servers to send and receive mails over the Internet. With a single click, you can send a whole binder or file cabinet containing many files. The recipient can retrieve your mail with another email program ( Outlook, Thunderbird,..) 

Multi criteria search

You can use the power of the database to search with many criteria. You don't need to learn SQL language, sqlDESKTOP will build the SQL query for you.

Click and run server database for organization without IT professional

Organization without IT professional can use sqlDESKTOPserver to share documents across a network for collaborative work. sqlDESKTOP server is very easy to use and does not require any knowledge about database. Up to 20 users can connect to sqlDESKTOPserver.

System requirements

Java 2 (version 1.5 or above - bundled with distribution file)

Windows ( NT, 2000, XP) or Linux + KDE or GNOME

Applet enabled browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape...)

SQL database :

sqlDESKTOP can work with any of the following databases

- DB2 version 5.2 or higher

- SQL Server version 6.5 or higher

- Oracle 8i version 1.6 or higher

- Postgresql

- mysql 

- InstantDB

- HSQL ( Free open source database - bundled with distribution file)   

- Derby - Cloudscape (free open source database bundled with sqlDESKTOPserver)      

 

If you don't want to set up a database, you can use sqlDESKTOP with HSQL. HSQL is bundled with sqlDESKTOP and is automatically installed and set up. And for the network version, use sqlDESKTOPserver

 

New RDBMS will be tested and will be added into the above list.
